Counterfeit Christianity is probably the best description I can give for a cult. Counterfeit Christianity is an imitation of real Christianity. Bible terms like "Jesus Christ, Resurrection, Salvation, and Atonement" are used by the Cult, but entirely different meanings have been assigned to these terms by the various cult groups.
Like counterfeit money which is sometimes difficult to detect, so it is difficult to detect counterfeit Christianity, since it looks like the real thing. Experts examining counterfeit money often hold it up to a strong light and look for identifying marks. Counterfeit Christianity also has identifying marks which can be seen when held up to an even stronger light, the light of God's word, the bible.
We are at an advantage if we know what to expect from a cult. Cultists are very well trained to appear "Christian", and indeed believe they are the true church, and you need the deliverance! Therfore, be bold and ask the question, "Do you believe the group you represent is the only true church on the face of the earth?"
If they reply that they are, or if they are evasive, making remarks like "Well, every church has a measure of truth but...", you have made an early detection of a Cultist.
Every true Chistian, if asked the same question, regardless of his denomination, would reply that the true church is comprised of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, and HE (not some organization) is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE, (John 14:6). No legitimate denomonation would claim that they alone and their members have salvation exclusively, but the cults (the counterfeits) do.

Mormons teach that Jesus Christ was born in heaven as the spirit child of Elohim (Heavenly Father) by one of his wives, and Jesus brother was Lucifer, who became Satan. Jesus is one of many gods.

Crash put it real well, if you look up the definition of a cult then either every religion is a cult with each other because most every religion believes everyone else is off base; or all decent religions, including Mormons are not cults. I wouldn’t listen to KirstyCristy however, she obviously has some issues and hatred which isn’t very Christian like at all. But, I will say that the Mormon Church isn’t for everyone.

As far as your friend he’s generally right about any religion being a cult, just like I said. But I will say that it is not preached that God has wives of god, to “populate” the planets he has. What we know is this: first, we can live forever as a family and husband and wife. If we can then it goes to show that God is married to, a heavenly mother. Now as far as him having many wives is irrelevant if it’s true. In fact, knowing that god is married, in itself, is not going to help us closer to heaven. God having many wives is not doctrine nor is not preached, nor do I think he really does. But, if he did, so what? He’s God, he can do that. He even let others in the bible do it.

By the way, members of the church don’t “earn” their way to heaven. The Mormon faith believes that “Faith without works is dead” is it says in the bible. And thusly we are always working to make our lives better for those around us and Christ, to help our faith.

Members of the mormon church would not consider themselves a part of a cult. The word “cult” derives from the Latin cultus, meaning "care" or "adoration." By this definition, almost all religions, including The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, exhibit at least some characteristics of a cult.
What is meant when one defines a religious group as a “cult”? According to the American Heritage Dictionary the word means:
a) A system or community of religious worship and ritual.

b) The formal means of expressing religious reverence; religious ceremony and ritual.
By these definitions, members of the Church of Jesus Christ would embrace the term. Certainly the Church is a community of religious worship and ritual, and clearly it formally expresses religious reverence. However, laypeople often mean something very different when they refer to Mormonism as a cult. The American Heritage dictionary provides another third definition that better explains the meaning most people attach to the word “cult

There have been hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands, of books written on Mormonism. Christians absolutely say that Mormonism (AKA LDS) IS a cult! One of the most oft quoted discrepancies between the teachings of Christianity and the teachings of Mormonism is about deeds. While various religions see the role of "works" and "deeds" somewhat differently, NO Christian religion teaches that you can in any way EARN your way into heaven. We call our salvation grace--AKA an UNMERITED favor from God. Not so with Mormons! They are ever working to be good enough to earn their way into heaven! Not to mention that they believe they are all going to be gods someday, rulers of their own planets, etc. Sometimes they seem like a cult and other times just plain whacks!

If you want to know more, just google Mormon cult and watch the "hits" come up. Many Christians have painstakingly outlined EVERY cultish difference between the teachings of Mormonism and the teachings of the Bible (God's word). NO Christian religion can stand in contraction to scripture without being labelled as a cult. Simple as that.

That is what they believe. That is only the beginning of it though. If you want to see more of what is going on, have a look at the movie "The Godmakers" it comes in 2 parts. Having seen the first movie more than 100 times, I can verify that the contents are true and have set people down who doubted what was said and found them the proof in the Mormon writings. The stuff about Kolob was a killer for some people. They found it hard to believe that this is a doctrine of the church and it had been kept from them.

I am a evangelical Christian and I have been taught that it is a cult. But I have always wondered what do the Mormons teach about the life of Jesus? Well, cult or no cult, we are all God's children and maybe we shouldn't "label" people so much. Labels are hurtful.

Yes Mormonism is absolutely a mind-controlling cult in every way, and it's a dangerous cult. My family is Mormon since 1853 with Brigham Young and I was raised in it so I know.

Mormons turn people against Christianity, and separate people from God, and lead them on Lucifer's path to "godhood" which will end up in hell.

Watch this little video about the Story of Joseph Smith,it answers your question about how the religion was started...

If you want, you can learn about their anti-Christian doctrines and what their "prophets" and leaders teach, and what their secret temple rituals are about, to back up what I say.

That's not what defines a cult, but some people say that Mormon fits the definition.
I've had very close Mormon friends, by the way. I'm not bashing.
