My cats want to eat with my puppy... But he only gets a cup a dog food a day...?

Well my dog is a mini pinscher and he only gets a cup of dog food a day.. my cats want to eat it even if i give them some in a dish higher up so my dog can't get it... but they still want to eat his.. My dog won't eat his food at one time so i leave it out for him plus.. I cant give it to him a little at a time becuase i am gone alot.. What can i do to give him the right amount of dog food a day?

Feed him only when you're home and put the cats in another room. Get your puppy on a feeding schedule...he'll learn when it's the best time to eat.

Dog food is not good for cats.

You should be feeding 2-3 *small* meals per day [no matter how long you're gone for. If the period of time that you're gone for is so long that you can't even feed him at least 2 small meals per day; why have you got a dog?]. You should also have your dog and cats on a feeding schedule - dogs love a routine.

You should feed him at around 7-8am and leave the food out for 15-20 minutes. Then (optional) again in the afternoon, then again at night.

You need to feed your cats in a separate room so the cats don't have a chance to eat his.

Perhaps your cats like the flavour? Try get them the same flavour food in cat food. Otherwise maybe you are not feeding your cats enough? If they're getting enough of the food they want maybe they wont eat your dogs food. I leave food available for my cats all day and night long- and bcos they have always had food available since i got them, they know there is no shortage and so they dont overeat and are very fit and healthy.

I have cats and dogs (min-pin, Chiuaua). The dogs love dry cat food. It does not hurt the dogs to eat cat food. I got on of those feeders, I fill it with dry cat food for them during the day. It really helps out.
