I read that dogs are usually in heat for about 6 weeks. My chihuahua has been in heat for about 10 weeks or more now. She is still bleeding some, still swelling, etc.

Could something be wrong? Should I take her to the vet immediately, or just wait and ask at her next appointment? Anyone else have this problem or know what the cause might be?

No, it is not normal.
A heat cycle is of the duration of three weeks: the first week, dogs are very playfull, and like to tease male dogs; the second week, they beg to be taken; the third week, they aren't interested in mating anymore, but the scent is still there, and that's when dog fights start.
A small size breed dog usually goes into first heat around 6-7 mos. of age. a medium to large size breed dog around 8-10 months; and a extra large size breed dog around 12-15 mos.
After that, they'll go in heat every six months, unless they didn't conceive, and they can go back in heat as soon as three months.
If you are not planning to breed your dog, then she's better off getting spayed, otherwise you'll be putting your dog in a life threatening situation: dogs who don't conceive during a heat cycle are prone to an uterine infection called pyometria, which is fatal if goes untreated.
I recommend you have your dog medically examined at once!!

Yes, something could be wrong. A dog's heat usually only lasts three weeks. I'd take her to the vet for a check-up.

No, not necessarily. Like woman, dogs don't always read the books. It may be a false heat or just a longer heat. If she seems lethargic or has a more foul odor then usual (especially if accompanied by a greenish or mucus yellow discharge) then take her in to see the Vet. She may have a vaginal infection.

I were operating with a breed certain rescue team for the superb 10 Years and that is human beings like you that save me and one yet another rescue team and safeguard busy. you do not understand sufficient to be breeding and could both have your female spayed or giver her up and raise corn for ethanol. that is glaring that you've performed no study into what you're doing and the breeder that to procure the canines must have lengthy gone to the same college you've. the basically reason to reproduce a canines is for coach and any respected breed would have made you signal a settlement to have the animal spayed in case you've been not likely to coach it besides as knowledgeable you on the ins and out of breeding. There are thanks to many canines in this u . s . that choose residing house and thanks to few houses.

Is this her first heat cycle? She may just have her hormones out of wack and that is why her cycle is lasting so long. One of my French Bulldogs was in heat for about 9 weeks the first time she cycled, but her second heat was normal. If it continues for another week or two, I would call the vet (or you can now if you want to).

Take her to the vet. Also set up a spay appointment so that you don't have to worry about problems like this. It is healthier too.

This is not normal, she could have a uterine infection or some other problem. Take her in immediately you would hate for her uterous to be seriously infected. I would rather take her in than have her be seriously ill as a result.
