Chatuchak Weekend Market is still in operation. What you read or heard from news is about some Thais wrecking up several stalls in Chatuchak. Only some stalls have been damaged. Another news is about the rental of the land owned by Chatuchak's owner, rumours have been reported that Chatuchak will not be in operation soon. But in general, it is still in operating, you can rest assure to visit the place and indulge in your shopping spree.

Looking for other cheap places apart from Chatuchak and MBK?? I would recommend SuanLum Night Bazaar and Silom Road at night. Those places are not that much cheap, but you can make a bargain. I think they're quite similar to Chatuchak market. Also, it's easy to get there. You can take either the BTS or the MRT.

Chatuchak's still in operation. Besides MBK, Pratunam and Suan Lum are highly recommended. There's also many mini-night markets outside most major shopping centers for shopping.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to get reliable information about anything here in Thailand. In my 5 yrs living here, I've learned not to pay much attention to rumours like that one about Chatuchak market closing. Given how much money they've pumped into that market in recent years, I find it hard to believe they would want to close it. Same for Suan Lum (night market). Rumours of its closing have been circulating for eons! Yet because of the MRT station right there, their business is better than ever.
As for alternatives for shopping, there are also PratuNam market and PratuNam plaza, just up the road from Central World Plaza. Great prices (and PratuNam plaza is air conditioned).

Nope, I dont beleive that the weekend market would be close without everyone here in Bangkok knowing it, I go there all the time and its seems very open to me! The garmet district is also a great place to find stuff, and China Town! in china town is a street called Samphen very cheap! If you have any questions please email me
