I was asked to plan a wedding for my brother and would like to know how to even go about doing it. They did not give me a time frame or nothing. I have to work from scrap and obviously I'm stomped. Please advise me on what to do and where to begin. Your help is most definitely appreciated. Thank you in advance. Happy New Years! :-)

First of all make a checklist, then get a binder with tabs to put everything in. Your checklist should consist of the following:

Date and time
Wedding Party
Venue for Wedding and Reception
Invitations
Officiate
Wedding Cake/Groom's Cake
Food - Catered or not, sit down dinner or buffet style, do they provide all the dishes or do you need to buy disposable
DJ or Band - Music to walk down the aisle to, Music for 1st dance
Decorations
Photographer
Announcement in the paper
Rentals - Tables, chairs, centerpieces
Favors
Guest Book
Rings
Marriage Certificate
Honeymoon

This should get you started. Good luck!

The other answers have given you great checklists, but I'd like to add that you should keep things organized by keeping them in writing so you don't miss anything or do something twice. Also, in planning my own wedding, I found weddingchannel.com to be an excellent help. You can store your guest list in the form of an address book there. You can also have guests go there for updated information about the event, and the couple can register for gifts at various stores on there. The best part is, it's free.

Before you even begin, however, you need some information from the couple, like the date, what kind of wedding they want, etc. If you don't have communication at this point, you may want to re-think taking this on.

Good Luck and Happy New Year to you too.

First thing is you need to get the date and place. Both those details are important. Find out what times of the year they like and work with it.

Ask them a bunch of questions about their favorite things. Colors, beach/mountain/fields, small and intimate or large and decorative, etc. Always keep them in the loop and have the final say, you don't want any surprises.

start buying wedding magazines. You have to take care of photographer, florist, minister, cake, caterer (although, from personal experience, if you can find a nice restaurant that does food for weddings, it makes life easier). I had 6 months to plan my wedding, and it turned out great!! I had no clue where to start untill I started buying those magazines (available in any grocery store).

I was very lucky to have an wedding planner and from my experience, here's a list of things you'd need to do to help co-ordinate the event...

-Catering (Pricing per head, and food selection)
-Reception (location & price)
-Favors (gifts for the attendees and bridal party)
-Honeymoon (Hotels and vacation stay)
-Church (location & price)
-Tuxedo (Fitting and rental)
-Limo (Rental and type of vehicle and whom it may carry other than bride and groom)
-Reception Seating arrangements
-Floral Arrangements (Selections & Orders)
-Invitations (Whom to invite, also select designs of cards, & program.

I've obviously listed them in random order, but hope that helps, if you need more info, let me know.
