I was diagnosed while I was trying to get pregnant with my first child. I didn't gain much weight with the pregnancy about 30 pounds which is average. BUT, I also was on the Thyroid med and after having my son it took a whole year to get the meds right and I could only get 15 lbs of the baby weight off even with exercise. It didn't help that the Depo-provera shot reacted with the Thyroid meds and prevented weight loss.

Since then I have had a second baby and I was able to workout all the way through that pregnancy, she's 8 months now and I only have about 12 lbs to go which in total was a loss of 55 lbs as I have finally got the meds right and stopped birth control and can lose weight now.

Get all the exercise you can and really watch the carbs you take in.. little known about Hypothyroidism is that it can lead to Diabetes and they can't really tolerate a lot of carbs as the body converts them to sugar and they can't process it. So keep that in mind a lean protein, lots of veggies and low carb diet is going to be really helpful to you.

good luck and watch for hidden sugars they aren't great for
hypo-t's.

Bless your heart. Unfortunately, this is a reaction to the disease. My daugther and three of cousins have it and all have gained quite a bit of weight. My daughter has tried everything to lose the weight, but as you say, no matter what she does, she keeps gaining instead of losing. She is now looking into possibly having gastric by pass or lipoband surgery, but she is researching whether the surgery would be in vain because of the disease. You can IM me in a couple of weeks if you wish, and I will let you know what the doctors told her.

I think you mean..hyperthyroidism..not hypo,..what were you diagnosed with..Graves Disease seems to be the most common, and yes your weight gain is normal. I wish I could tell you that you will eventually return to your former weight, but they have been telling my Mother that for the last 6 years.
Did you also have...nodules in your thyroid? if so how many?Did you take the radioactive drink to burn out your thyroid gland? This accounts for your medication having to raised in dosage, as more and more of your thyroid is burnt out.

Which medication did the doctor put you on, there are several for the hyperthyroid problem? you can try a different one, and that may slow the weight gain and up your energy levels. Again, my Mother hasn't had change in her weight gain, she put on a total of 40 pounds, then it leveled off.
Thyroid problems run Mother to child, sister to sister, etc.. usually one is hyper and one is hypo...there are several web sites that give advice on this, as soon as I find one that is more help I will post it on my yahoo 360 page...Take Care, Good Luck
