I have often contemplated getting a tattoo, then I really think about it and realize that that damn thing will be there for the rest of my life! You are right, it is a personal decision, but you had better REALLY love the design and it's location because having one removed really hurts.
Have someone artistic design one and draw it on you with sharpie markers. That way, you can get the sense of how you might like it and also deal with others reactions (if that is a factor in making your decision).
I have done that for a few of my friends and the design has lasted up to 3 and a half weeks!

To get a tattoo, you need to be confident in your decisions, because deciding is the easy part...living with it is the hard part. You need to know what you want. You need to have an idea jump out at you like woah! I want that more than anything! And to get this don't look online, it's not original, just go to your tattoo artist and ask them, they;ll do something especially for you. Would you like to walk down the street and see the same thing on someone else?

Well, it sounds like you kinda know what is going on. I have wanted a tattoo for a long time, and have had a lot of ideas come and go. It is something that take a lot of time and patience. Definitely search on-line. Ask yourself what is important to you, what do you love, what can you just not live without, what keeps you going. Questions like those helped me figure out what I want. If you like to draw, sketch out some ideas to take to a professional tattoo artist, or get a friend to. Just keep searching, something will come to you. Good luck!

I chose between my shoulder blades because this will never sag with age or babies. Also can be displayed if wanted or covered up if working in a professional setting. I also designed my tattoo by drawing it and having a tattoo artist perfect it. I made it meaningful...it is of my 3 children as babies. See link below to see my picture on yahoo photos.

I agree with a lot of the previous answers
I got a tattoo about 48 hours ago, its tiny and on my lower right ab, it also has a ton of meaning and symbolism (its a tribal sign for water)... I felt really compelled to get it done, you'll know it when you feel it.
I would suggest getting a tattoo artist to do a temp tattoo so you can see what its like to have something semi-permanent. if you decide to go permanent, make sure its something meaningful...
try photobucket.com, i have a lot of friends who have found designs there

The best tattoo you is the one you don't get because you aren't 100%, totally sure you want it. Not sure about sites, but you can google women's tattoo designs and sure some will come up

I totally agree with lolapug99: Wait until you have something to commemorate before you take the leap. I got mine, which is a cross right about my bottom, to celebrate my 30th birthday. I just love it. No matter how many other folks I see with tats in the same place, mine is still so special to me because it represents a personal turning point. I also love the location because I can show it or hide it when I want, unlike other areas.

If you truly want a tattoo, you'll figure out what you want it of and where you want it to be on your own and that way, you're less likely to regret it.
As someone who is into the modification lifestyle, I've met many people in the community who regret getting tattoos because a friend of theirs said "Hey so-and-so, you should totally get this tribal armband/celtic knot/etc!"
You can always browse the flash sections of bmezine.com if you're interested in seeing what other people have designed.

the best advice you will get from any with a tattoo or not. Is that you should never get a tatto until you have a real special reason and meaning behind what you want to get. Otherwise you will outgrow it and it will be meanigless. if your young wait till there is something that you want to celebrate or remember. i looked everywhere for a tattoo and couldn't find one i liked because they meant nothing to me . and i just wanted to have something meaningless like a butterfly tattoed on myself
