A good average time for a 40 something is in between 7:25-8:00 minute miles.
I am 30 and I can do a 6:30 but I die after that. If I do a 5 mile run I can average the 7:25-8:00 and during the runs the 40+ guys were right there with me or better. This all depends how good of shape your in. If you haven't run in a while start setting goals to what you can do without to much stress on your breathing and heart rate. As you run more and more push for your goal that you set for yourself which will take initiative from you to get it done.

Good thing you asked this in the "Horse Racing" section, so that it can be addressed by bonafide experts.
