The mindless destruction of the environment involved in putting money in the already fat pockets of developers is terrifying... priceless land is being destroyed, and for what? for flimsy housing and dollar bills... What will it take for them to have any sort of "Scrooge moment"; What will it take for them to realize how hideously destructive this is? Are they ever going to care to understand why they are being begged to stop?

It will continue as long as it is profitable...and it always is.

People have to live somewhere. Unfortunately, the developers only care about making profits, not building communities. With better urban planning, homes could be mixed in with businesses and industrial areas so that people could live, work, and shop within walking or bicycling distance of everything they need. This does not happen on its own. It requires careful planning and forethought by city governments and enforcement of zoning laws. Although this inhibits individual freedom somewhat, it ends up being better for everyone because property values increase, downtown areas remain vibrant instead of turning into slums, and people get to know each other instead of being adversaries, fighting for a few feet of pavement on the expressway. This is the way the cities of the future should be built. It will limit long commutes, traffic, and further environmental destruction.

Where are all the people gonna go? You gotta put them somewhere. Personally, I would rather be sprawled out than crammed in a sardine can. I agree with you on the developers problem with flimsy housing though. We should be building sturdy, environmentally friendly structures.

They are scraping and paving the Gulf Coast, destroying habitat and ruining the charm of places that attracted people to begin with.
