I recently got the bright idea to spray paint my cars old plastic wheel covers with silver paint. (By the way, it worked great.) But on to my question...I went to one of our famous department stores to purchase the paint and while checking out the cashier very loudly said "You aren't going to huff this are you?" I was shocked and said "Excuse me." She repeated the question even louder prompting looks from everyone in line behind me and people from four aisles down. Embarressed to death I just said "Of course not. I'm painting my hubcaps because they look horrible." First of all, I didn't realize Wal-mart cashiers were the paint police but I was absolutely humiliated (some of the people were even aquaintances of mine.) What would your response be to such a question?

Thanks for all of the response everyone! For the record I am 33 years old and I only purchased one can...I assumed that because it was the only thing I was purchasing I stood out to her. Fortunately one can was all I needed...If I had 3 or 4 cans and she asked me this I would be pretty sure that many of my aquaintances would be likely to believe she was accurate in her assumption!

Ask politely-
Would you page the MANAGER PLEASE?
Then-wait...never mind how many people are in line---
just wait for that manager...then ask cashier to repeat that rude remark in same tone of voice when manager arrives-- MANAGER--not floor supervisor....
Then ask for a complaint form-don't purchase any products--
and leave-be polite...be sure any other customers who heard this person supports your story--get their name--if they will allow--
but file a written complaint against that cashier..
that cashier will think twice....if not fired....will get a verbal-poss written write up and won't forget it-others cashiers will take notice also.
you can bet it will be mentioned to all employees--watch loose lips..

I do sympathize with your situation and wish that companies would properly train their cashiers on proper protocol with such items, I am wondering if in some way the cashier was supposed to question the purchase. I know that paint can't be purchased by teens in Houston?? because of graffiti and some new law that just passed. It is sad that the losers who are always doing wrong end up always making the good guys and gals pay for their mistakes.

Wal Mart actually regulates how many of those can be sold to one customer, just like some medicines. However, she shouldn't have treated you in that manner. If you were attempting to purchase more than the allowed limit, she should have just told you that she could not sell you more than the allotted amount. I would speak to management about the treatment you received, and take your receipt with you. The receipt will tell the manager who the cashier was if you don't know a name.

I would have probably went with your answer also, or a close variable. But, I like the idea of the slander suit in small claims AND clamshell19's answer. I understand that they are not allowed to sell paint to minors, that's good. And some places only allow you to buy a couple cans at a time. (How much does it take to kill your brain cells?). But, given all, you definately should have talked to the manager and made a formal complaint.

If you are old enough to buy the paint...
The right response is...
May I see the manager??
Don't budge till he shows up.
Have the clerk repeat what he has said.
Make a formal complaint to the manager.
You have the right, and your saving the
next guy in line from going through the same.
More people need to stand up....
We'll start getting much better service.

I would have said. "let me talk to your manager right now" and waited in line until the manager came to her till then I would have rudely said "your cashier was extremely rascist and ignorant to me and has humiliated me in front of all of these people..I demand an apology or I will never shop here again. !" that would make the little ***** eat her words. I am sorry that happneed to you but sometimes you have to cause a scene.

I would have ensured the cashier lost her job.
If I was the manager and a complaint of this nature was made to me about a cashier making such comment, I would verify the comments made and then if found to be correct, fired them.

My husband's second full time job is a cashier for Wal-Mart and he does not treat people like that even when he has been on his feet all day! She was just flat out rude and mean! You should have requested to speak to a CSM on the spot. However, it is not to late to call and report her. Ask to speak to the manager, her name or id number should be on your receipt. They WILL talk to her about it!

I would put the paint can down and say can I speak to your manager? And then she would feel like an idiot! When the manager came I would explain that this employee should be fired and explain what she said to you. Behavior like that should not be tolerated at all. You should go back and complain!!

My response would be, "yeah, you want to meet me in my car like we usually do?" The cashier was obviously trying to be funny, but obviously the joke fell way short. Try not to be so sensitive...your aquaintances know that you are not that type of person!
