Try a humidifier (cool moist air) from Walgreen or someplace like that. It puts moisture in the air and helps stop dry cough. If that does not work then try a vaporizer (warm moist air) either one should help. Good Luck and Good for you taking care of your Mother, you should be proud.

since they have a virus that can be more difficult to treat than if it was a bacterial infection. Antibiotics cannot cure a virus causing dry cough. You will have to consult your doctor on other options on how to treat your children's dry cough. Take paracetamol, ibuprofen, or aspirin to control fever. Have a lot of fluids especially water, or if you must, use gatorade. Cough medicine that you can buy at pharmacies can help but there is no evidence that they really help. And of course Antibiotics will not work for this kind of cough. There is no 'quick fix' for a cough due to a virus infection. You need to be patient until the cough goes. Most viral infections go without treatment as your immune system clears the virus.

This requires detailed investigtion and find out the cause for the cough. Try to take a chest x-ray and see nothing is abnormal with the lungs. she can chew Eladi Vati ayurvedic pills. Alternatively, she can chew Yesti Madhu available in roots or pills. Again it will be trial and error. there are many home remedies such as drink hot milk with turmeric poweder, take a spoon of warm ghee with either turmeric powder or sugar, Chew kadi sakkar etc. If the coughing is due to heat in the body, you will have to give some thing to cool the body. If it is due to cold, you will have to give some thing hot. If it is due to the reaction of the allopathy medicines, you will have to take some thing to nutralise it. Why not consult a homoeopathic doctor who starts treatment based on the symptioms?

Hi ~

Lots of things cause dry coughs....(hot weather, dry heat, allergies, etc)...

What has worked for me in the past:
-warm peppermint tea with honey in it sip it
-sip hot broth
-sucking on vitamin c drops (near cough drops in CVS)
-drinking lots of water
-going to a chiropractor
-humidifier (close to wear sitting/sleeping) moist air can help

*When a coughing fit comes on..a teaspoon of honey helps line the throat..so not irritated...

Ginger - Peel and cut ginger into nickle-size pieces, add water and boil. Drink the liquid while hot. It works!

Chinese secrets - A simple cough remedy:
Take an Asian pear or an apple, and cut it in half. Cut out the seeds and fill the space with a tablespoon of honey or a pinch of rock sugar. Cook the fruit in a pot with 1-2 cups water. When soft you can eat the fruit and drink the fluid. For yellow phlegm leave the peel on, for white phlegm cut the peel off. If the cough is at it's worst in the morning make it then, if worse in the evening (or trouble sleeping) eat before bedtime. The worst thing that can happen is a healthy snack.

I hope some of these work for you!

My 3 year old daughter gets a really bad dry cough when she gets a cold. I do not know why but she does every time. I use saline drops. Salt water drops to put up her nose. I do this every hour on the hour and it clears her up completely. Ieven do it for myself and it works. It does not burn and all you need is a teaspoon of salt. Being as though her cough is rough, try a tablespoon of salt. Every hour on the hour. Hope this helps you guys. God bless your mother man. 74 that's wonderful.

It could be a side effect of the medication she had got for the post angioplasty treatment. But, dust is the villain in most cases. You must ensure that she lives in a dust free environment. Simple pranayama will do a lot of good for her. On occasions, when she requires medicine, she may take anti-histamines. If that is also not doing any good, she must take medical help.

If she is taking Tab Captopril or Lisinopril for her hypertension or heart problem then dry cough is the side effect of this drug , so ask your doctor to change it , if not taking any of these then start Tab Levocetrizine 5mg once daily for 2 weeks and if she does not improve with it you can again log in and tell me .
