Well, it certainly depends on what religion you're thinking of.
Only the extremely conservative or literal sects of Christianity believe that there is some type of burning, scalding, punishing hell.
Most other religions, including Buddhism and Judaism, believe that Heaven is merely a state of being content with the actions that you have carried out throughout the course of your life.
That is to say, (at least in the views of Buddhism/Judaism), the mother may not be in complete Heaven if she does not believe that she has been a good mother/person. The child himself may be in Heaven if he believes that he has done everything in his life to the best of his abilities.
In regards to the "painful" Hell and "perfect" Heaven vision, I'm not so sure about what possible answer I can come up with.

Heaven is perfect because that's the way God made it. If you go to heaven you won't miss anyone who didn't make it. There's no heart break in heaven. There are no crippled people in heaven. No blindness, sickness, no wrinkles or pain. I read a book recently called "90 Minutes in heaven". It's a true story about a man who died in an auto accident and went to heaven. After being in heaven for 90 minutes he came back to life by a man's prayers for his recovery. It's tells all about what heaven was like and how he survived the accident. Heaven is exactly the way it is discribed in the bible. Read the book if you want to know more. Both books!! Do what you can to go to heaven.

The old heaven and hell doctrine is illogical and is not true. Heaven is perfect because there is no sin there. Upon the first mortal death, one wakes to find that there is still work to do before heaven becomes crystal clear. We all must pay the last farthing to balance our accounts, and for some, this will seem like an eternal hell.

Reaching a full understanding of the afterlife, I believe is one of the only things that is truly impossible. It is something that many of us desperatly seek answers for though.
Through my own searching, I've accepted that Heaven is an oasis which is so great that no one living outside of it could ever imagine how great it is. It is a place where we, upon entering, become incapable of having bad feelings, causes of such feelings are erased. It's hard to imagine, but I've been told that we will become incapable of remembering those who we are without, unless they come to Heaven with us. Therfore, a child in Hell is almost no longer our child, and we are incapable of remebering this person, as this would make us feel horrible.
Even accepting this theory is difficult, as I couldn't imagine leaving behind loved ones, or being seperated by places such as Heaven and Hell, and being left with no memories.
It's a toughy--I tried.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster hath revealed to me in a dream that there are almost NO christians in heaven. This makes heaven even more perfectre than it already is. I mean, how much more perfect could a place with beer volcanoes and stripper factories be?

What will be in Heaven is not known to any living mortal.... What is know is that a greater Truth will be known... it is not known if relationships will be as they are here on earth... most likly not... we do know there will be no marrage in Heaven... But parent child relationships probably will not be as here either... all will be centered on God... byound that no one knows...If the hypothetical child was not of the age of accountability then I am of the Faith that that child will go to Heaven...

That's to hypothetical. It can't be proven
that either the adult or child went to either
place together or alone. Besides, there is
no heaven or hell, they were created by
organized religion to give people someplace
to shoot for or run from.
It's no different than how a child is rewarded
for a good deed and reprimanded for doing a
bad thing.

The child would not go to hell, all children go to heaven. Also, your spiritual being wouldn't want to have any associations with anything but the heavenly beings and heaven.

No, our relationships in heaven won't be the same as here on earth. And the love of Jesus and the complete presence of Him, is probably enough outshine anything else. After all, aren't we supposed to love Him above everyone/thing else? With that said, I absolutely don't want any of my close family members or friends to go to Hell, but ultimately it's about Jesus. It will be perfect. There'll be no tears, so ya know...no sadness for losses here on earth.

Who says that would happen that way. A child is the most pure of all God's creations. As a matter of fact, Jesus said that when we pray we should come to Him like a little child. So in what world would the child automatically go to hell? May God Bless U.
