Stairs freak some dogs out. I have two dogs and neither has ever seen my basement, you could throw a steak down the steps and they will not go down them.

I had a problem with my dog and steps. i think it was because he slipped once or twice and freaked him out. Try making it a game and putting treats on every second stair. Gentle coaxing and patience should prevail. Make sure the steps aren't slippery. Also if your dog can see through the stairs it might scare him. If this is the case try covering them temporarily with a sheet until he realises there isn't a problem

Good question. My puppy won't go down the basement stairs or up if I carry her down. I don't know if they are overwhelmed by the amount. 4 and 5 stairs ok but not more.

How old is your dog? My last dog had trouble with her hips, and going up stairs was painful, but going down was fine. Are they hardwood or slippery? We just installed carpet squares to help my current dog go downstairs.
Be patient with him and be sure to reassure him when he's going up the steps. Also, reward him when he goes up. If he associates the top of the stairs with a treat or a petting, he may be more willing to try them.
Good luck.

Have you checked his nails lately? If the stairs are slippery or the nails can catch on the carpet, this may be a cause of problems.
Lameness or arthritis or an accident on the stairs?

I have a Yorkie, and we live in a split foyer. He'll go down the first flight of stairs, but WILL NOT, NEVER HAS NEVER WILL, go down the second flight of stairs. I have no idea why. If we carry him down there, he will go up both, but never down the second.

Maybe he fell down when nobody was home and is now afraid because he remembers everytime he nears it. I don' think you should be too worried, but just give him time.

Something may have happened to frighten him or he may be developing arthritis. Depending on his age and breed, it could be the latter. If it continues, take him to the vet.
