for that price you can get a pretty good camera. check out the canon A540.. it's a bit more than $170, but if you search online you can get great deals. go a notch down the model lineup for a cheaper version with similar features -- A530 or A520. you can google the A540 to read the many reviews online, and decide if it's something that you're looking for in a camera.

Keep saving your money. You'll be a lot happier with a better quality camera. Depending on how much photography you want to do. I'm a forensic photographer with about $20,000.oo invested so far, and I still need more equipment. Also, when buying a camera, try to get one that uses ordinary batteries that you can buy anywhere. You don't want to be in the middle of nowhere with dead batteries. Check photo magazines for tips. Most of the back part of these magazines are full of ads. I bought my stuff this way. It's usually cheaper, and if you buy from another state, a lot of times you don't have to pay any taxes. Make sure you get the American warranty. B&H cameras in N.Y. have pretty good deals. Good luck.

Go for a digital camera. I presume.

You might have to increase your budget abit more. For starters I will definitely go for any of the Canon's Powershot range or the Sony Cybershot's range.

They are user friendly, stylish and has most if not all the features you are ever going to use. Sony has their own battery. Canon uses standard double AA's.

For expandability, Sony is very good but also very exclusive in the sense that you are limited in the future to shop Sony. Which is not necessary a bad thing as they are very good and has the scope. So, Powershots or Cybershots.

Thats the way I think to go. And for digital you will need software. All cameras come with their standard software but for flexibility download a free, very handy, and very resourceful photo editing and organizing software called Picasa. It will make storing, organizing, retrieving and editing a breeze. Download it @ http://www.geocities.com/lcming/Digitalphotography

Charles Mike is correct but as your 1st answerer said save a bit more...I'd look at Canons starting about $220; but don't forget about a memory card which could cost between $30 and $50.

Go to somewhere like BestBuy and ask someone to explain the different cameras to you. If the camera you want costs more, hold on until you get some additional money.
