If you are travelling may I recommend to you the MB-D200 battery grip, this plugs in the bottom of the camera and allows the simultaneous use of two batteries. It also comes with a holder to allow you to use 6 x AA batteries. I have a set of Lithium batteries sitting in my version for my D80.

How long your battery will last depends on how you use your camera. If you use the review screen a lot that will flatten the batteries quickly. Also use of the on-board flash will flatten the batteries faster.

My D50 takes about 700 photos on a charge. My D80 seems to only take about 400, but I use the review screen a lot and it is larger than the D50's. I never use the on-board flash.

Lithium Ion rechargeables do not suffer from memory effect but there is another gotcha. They have a certain number of charges in them and then they degrade rapidly in performance. So it still pays to run them close to flat before recharging.

I just use my battery until it is close to flat and then just recharge it unless I know I am going to be away or am going to take a lot of photos, then I just charge all batteries anyway.

The MB-D200 battery pack will make the camera more bulky and heavier, but you can shoot for a long long time between charges, and you can use AAs if you get stuck.

Hope this helps.
