There are not very many job opportunities for ornithologists - how many ornithologists have you met in your lifetime?
People who hold degrees in ornithology work mostly in academic settings, for environmental groups, or government agencies. Academic positions are largely research and teaching. Positions with environmental groups are a mix of research, conservation projects, and political lobbying. Positions with state agencies and Federal agencies work mostly with managing game birds and their habitat, along with a smaller number of jobs related to non-game birds in research, conservation, and endangered species management.
There are maybe one or two dozen ornithology jobs in the US that open each year at universities, zoos, and research institutions for people who have PhDs.
At the Master's degree level, there are maybe a hundred or so jobs that open each year in wildlife management agencies, where at at least part of the job deals with birds.
At the BS level in zoology, wildlife biology, etc, each year, there are usually a few dozen full-time, permanent technical positions and several hundred to nearly 1000 seasonal positions where at least part of the job is managing bird habitat or working directly with birds.
