Twelve Nights of Christmas." The tree is put up on December 24 and taken down after New Years or on January 6, known as "Twelfth Night." So The Twelfth Night, when the festivities are finally - formally - over is the traditional removal time.

But once Christmas is over (sunset of the 25th , what matter the date? But for sentimental reason I just wait until after The New Year or the Twelfth Night too.

I went to Alaska this summer, well more like April and people still had their lights up and decorations for that matter - yard art, etc. hehe I thought that was odd, but then in our home we always took everything down on the first of january, or just during the first week. Im going to attempt to find time on Monday to do it, but if that doesnt happen, it will have to wait until the next weekend!

A lot of people spend New Year's Day taking down Christmas decorations since there isn't much else to do on that day. I personally think you should take decorations down on December 26 but I'm sure most people would find that a little odd.

I usually don't take mine down until January 1st. Of course this year we are going to be out of town, so I took mine down at 7:00 p.m. on Christmas night.
