To purchase a handgun in California you will need the following:

California ID or Drivers license
HSC card (Handgun safety Course)
Proof of residence in Calif.
A. A utility bill in your name and address. (utility bill is gas, water, garbage, Cable TV or reg. phone bill not cell phone)
B. Or a current Vehicle registration in your Name.

You have to be 21 years old to buy a handgun. No Felony, violent misdemeanors, restraining orders or owe back child support or state taxes.

Your girlgfriend can pay for it as long as it is a gift for you and the gun is not going to her and she is a prohibited person.

To get the HSC card the dealer/gun shop you buy the gun at can give you the test and issue the card. they sell study books for 50 cents.

You need to go to the gun store, pick out the handgun, and then you need to start filling out forms and answering questions. These are about your criminal background or any other grounds under which you would be banned from owning a handgun, like being a convicted felon, illegal immigrant, or clinically insane. Then you gotta take the handgun safety test which is a short written test. Then you give a thumbprint. Then you pay for it, and there's a bunch of taxes and fees, so expect to spend around $50 extra dollars on the pistol.

And then you have to leave the store without the gun. You have to wait around 10 long days. Then you go back to the store with your receipt and paperwork to finally pick up the handgun. Then you're a happy guy.

Your girlfriend could buy it, but then it would be under her name, and she would have to fill out the background forms and give her thumprint, etc. She can't walk in there and say "I wanna buy this .45 for my boyfriend for his birthday, can I get it gift-wrapped?"

But as others have said, we Californians live under a relative degree of tyranny when it comes to owning guns. Fortunately, if you want to get one, it's certainly possible.

But just want to warn you that it's rediculously easy to get convicted of felonies for carrying your gun around, sometimes even if its in your locked trunk.

Let me help you with this! Get the hell out of Kommiefornia if you want to own and carry weapons. California is the biggest UN-American state in the entire country. They violate people's right to bear arms, and limit your God given and Constitutionaly promised right to keep and carry firearms. If you want to purchase a firearm there, though probably not impossible, it's going to require cutting through some red tape. Hope this helps..

regrettably, you could't take the handgun out of the gun shop without being a resident. With that being reported, you ought to purchase the handgun and have the gun shop deliver the gun to a gun shop on your place state. once you arrive back on your place state, you could then %. up the handgun. this is termed a FFL pass. good success on your purchase, and thank you for serving!

Money, and then wait 10 days. Or you could drive to Arizona or Nevada and just wait one night then and get it the next day.
