We have a beautiful, healthy 3 yr old daughter and she's been asking for a little sister. I cannot have any more kids due to an illness but I do want more kids. I hear it's expensive to adopt. any recommendations?

It's not necessarily expensive to adopt. I'm currently in the process of intercountry adoption. Because I'm single and under 30, I'm limited as to where I qualify to adopt. Most of the more expensive countries (like China for example) are out of the question b/c I don't meet the qualifications. However my adoption, in the end, will cost roughly between 18, 000 - 20, 000 dollars.

Local/Provincial adoptions are much cheaper. There are two routes: Public or Private. Public is when you are adopting from a government agency - and you don't get to choose the child (in BC, check your province's rules), but it's usually "free" and they provide you with monthly monetary assistance if the child is special needs, as most will be.

Private adoptions are done via a registered adoption agency approved by the ministry of childen but not affiliated with the government. This is where birth mothers go to find someone to take care of their child - the stereotype of what we think of in terms of adoption. I'm not certain of the fees. But they would be significantly cheaper than intercountry.

There are also bank loans available specifically for adoption, and tax credits as well, depending on where you live.

I'm in BC, so my biggest resource for getting a "head start" was at http://www.bcadoption.com/default.asp and at http://www.adoptionbc.com/

the best thing would be to google adoption + your province.

all the best.

I would definately look into adoption. It varies from agency to agency. All you can do is make some phone calls and get some more detailed information. Good luck!
