How do I know what kind of worm it is? I had over the counter wormer in my house but it said it was for roundworms and hookworms. The tapeworm is described as being seen in small dried pieces. This doesn't look like roundworm as she has had that before but there aren't any tiny/small pieces like described in tapeworm. Only long ones. Help?

If you don't think they are round worms, they probably are tape worms sometimes they don't always come out in small segments. Especially if your dog is on some sort of heartworm prevention which would be preventing roundworms anyways. The best dewormer is from you vet so when you go bring a stool sample just to be sure.

I would not depend on over-the-counter wormers. They can be very hard on the animal. You really must have a Vet advise you on this because he will know the proper medication to prescribe for this worm. Sounds like roundworms. Tape worms resemble rice in the stool. In any case, worms can rob your pet of his nutrition and he can become very ill. Take care.

Roundworms looks like spaghetti but shorter about 10 to 15 cm in length. Hookworms are so small as they are like threads and hardly visible ( literally like thread use to saw clothing) but only about 3 cm in length. With tapeworms, there are two kinds of tapeworms in dog. One is called Dipylidium and the other is Diphyllobothrium. Both of these are long attached to the intestine but when they come out, they come out in segments. Dipylidium come out in single segments like the size of a grain of rice and it is alive (moving) together with the feces on the surface of it or comes out alone. Diphyllobothrium comes out also in segments but many segments appearinng like accordion but its diameter is about 1 cm or less and its length is variable maybe 5 or 10 cm or more.
If you think it looks like spaghetti, then it is roundworm and you can use the dewormer you have. If it is a tapeworm, then you have to go to the vet to ask for tapeworm dewormer.

Take the dog and a stool sample to the vet ASAP. The vet can determine what kind of worms and prescribe the correct dewormer.

take the dog and a decently fresh stool sample (less than 24 hours old) to the vet. it sounds like tapeworm but the vet will be able to tell for sure and will give better meds than you could find anywhere else.

Ok, first, that's just, ew.

And second, if you see some type of worm coming out her @$$, you need to take her to the vet! If you know what certain worms look like, then just get the otc(over the counter) meds for them. But if you don't know what they are, then you need to take her to the vet!!

Bring your dog to the vet as soon as you can. If you ever see anything like that, always go to the vet first. They will know better than you and it'll save you time and money, and it'll help your dog faster.

Agreed ... GO TO THE VET immediately. Also, you'll notice her scratching her rear end by dragging in on the ground for comfort.

I would talk to your vet. You don't want to give to dog the wrong kind of meds.

good luck
