Is your name "secret_society" because you don't want to be recognized as asking questions like this one? South Korea has been in talks with the North even since the armistice discussing just that point. They have been feeding the North for free in the hopes some day they can mend the fences. They hardly follow any US policy and in fact have considered asking us to leave. Before you ask the Army War Colleges has stated that we could not win a war against China and that war with North Korea would probably end up in a draw. I can explain that if you like! I hope this answers your question. God Bless You and Our Southern People.

its all politics...many south koreans want to reunite with the north but the south gov't is afraid of the economic hardships that would come with this...also south korea's gov't is in a difficult position when it comes to its relationship with the u.s. because the u.s. maintains a small force of about 28,000 troops in south korea since the end of the korean war.
the u.s. has also paid the korean gov't to send troops to vietnam (s korea maintained the 2nd largest force in vietnam after the u.s.). with what the u.s. has done to help s korea, it is hard to disagree with u.s. policy, especially when both countries are very close economically.
the kim regime in north korea wants to stay in power, just like any other dictatorship in the world, and likely does not favor reuniting at all. the common ppl in north korea may favor it though. hard to tell for sure since north korea is just bout the most isolated society in human history.

in order to reunite with the North one of the governments would have to dissolve. The North won't dissolve peacefully, and the South shouldn't dissolve because it is more succesful. And also the South doesnt stick to US policy like glue, in fact they refused to do ship searches on the North Korean vessels.

I used to live in South Korea and I can assure you that they very much want to reunite with the North. The problem is the North's atrocious communist government.

At this point reunification would be a tremendous drain on the ROK economy. The ROK/PDRK economic disparity is much larger than the FRG/DRG disparity. Still, the PDRK could just collapse and make reunification inevitable. The PRC wouldn't be very happy about that.

As I understand it they don't want to pay to bring the North up to their standard of living, which would be the natural result of that action.
