They can be physically addictive. Going off them cold turkey can cause a withdrawal syndrome similar to alcohol withdrawal.

I've been on a small dose of Ativan for about four years. I take .5 mg at night (w/Seroquel) and .5-1 mg as needed...which I rarely do. I've had no habit forming behaviors happen, no addiction, no need to keep raising the dose to get the same effect, no side effects from missed doses. Sure the benzos should be used with caution, especially if used longer than short-term, because there is a risk of dependency, but I think they get a bad rep. They're a highly effective medication.

I've been on a daily dose of Klonopin since September 2005 and have been taking Xanax as needed since August of 2005.

I have been prescribed klonopin in a daily theraputice dose and an as needed dose for over five years.
