You can not even leave for basic training with an outstanding parking ticket. Everything must be cleared before leaving for training. You cannot even take the physical and enter the Delayed Entry Program (DEP) with anything outstanding.

The days of "jail or military" from the judge are long gone.

Forget the Navy and the Air Force. Our Navy son has seen two Nukes kicked out for a DUI in the last year. Try the Army and the Marines.

If it was a felony, it might be tough. You need to go to a recruitment office and lay it all out for them. And DON'T SIGN ANYTHING unless it is to let you in the service. If one recruiter turns you down, go talk to another but don't leave a paper trail. If you can get a reference from your probation officer, do it.

BUT ALWAYS TELL THEM THE TRUTH! Lying will get you in a passel of trouble.

I hear they're lowering the requirements. I don't know anything specific, but according to NPR the old rules don't apply because they need more recruits.
