Theodore Sturgeon (fine American non-scumbag science fiction writer of the mid-20th century) once wrote, "Ninety percent of everything is crud."

As if in proof, 90% of the people who quote this get it wrong, saying "Ninety percent of everything is crap." Scumbags they are, and crud, by definition.

Anyway, this observation, now known as Sturgeon's Law, has been almost universally accepted as accurate, except by those who think it's overly optimistic.

Myself, I go back and forth on the optimistic part, usually depending on how long it's been since I've had to commute in rush-hour traffic. Still, I suspect that there is a superfluity of scumbags in pretty much any country in the world, with the obvious exception of Australia. I mean, for the sake of argument, I'm willing to concede the possibility, just the POSSIBILITY that somewhere, in a grotty little bar in the outback or a government office in Canberra, there may be an Australian that I wouldn't consider as candidate for me best mate, within moments of meeting him.

But I've never met an Aussie who didn't make me think they're the finest blokes on the planet.

(To which I expect a ton of mail from Aussies telling me "Aow, no, mate, there's this bleeder in Fremantle I once met, meaner'n a taipan with a toothache! You'd sodding HATE him!")

Men do not understand a self-sufficient woman.

I was acquainted with one young woman who would ask for money on a first date!!! She explained to me very plainly, "He wants something from me, so I want something from him."

While I see that she did have a point, I've never expected a man to take care of me. Looking back, I see now that a lot of men *want* a woman who wants them to take care of them. Men need to feel useful. But then there are a few jerks who get the attitude you describe.

On the American thing, we are all so spoiled, it's ridiculous. Even the "poor" Americans are rich by most countries' standards.
