Are you flying from North America? That will generally take about 7 to 12 hours (depending on your coast). If you are taking an overnight "red-eye" flight, then your best bet is to try to sleep on the plane for the entire duration (though generally you can't). From my travel experiences I find it a lot more difficult to adjust to jet lag if you are flying in the direction of earth's rotation (which is your case to England). If you want to read, bring an "escape novel" that will catch your attention for a prolonged period of time, though it is true that when they turn off the main lights in the cabin, your eyes will become very tired/watery from (1) dark surrounding and (2) the lack of humidity in the plane cabin. Meals are usually served a hour after take off, and sometimes another one at about 1.5 hours before landing (with even longer flights you get a third snack in mid-flight). As a rule the airplane food, well, is airplane food (generally there are 2 choices for the main course, unless you requested vegetarian beforehand; sometimes, though, the choices run out), and eating too much of it may cause you to nauseate afterwards. Instead drink plenty of water, and don't sit sedentary for the entire flight (many people may get up and stand around the bathroom area, doing stretching or just moving their limbs). Air turbulences may be frightening sometimes (especially those that bring you vertically up and down), but generally I find a moderate amount of sideway shaking conducive to sleep.

If possible, get an aisle or window seat. Try not to be seated between two people (it's quite claustrophobic, especially in the economy class).

When descending, you will likely have discomfort with your ears. Just be prepared, and chewing a gum during descent might help alleviate the discomfort.

Generally I don't view long-distance flying an enjoyable experience (especially those 18+ hour flights really start to take a toll on your health). But if you are doing it the first time, you may enjoy it, or at least you can prepare to make it as painless as possible.

Flying is torture these days unless you are in First Class.
Even then they still blow everyone elses Germs on you through the Air Conditioning.
You might try to fly out of Canada on Zoom Airlines and buy the extra seat space options.

A long flight is exceptionally boring and uncomfortable. Bring a book and perhaps something to play music, but, if I were you, I would try to sleep as much as possible to pass the time.

If you have a ipod or mp3 player, bring it. :) Make sure your battery is charged.

If you are allowed to bring a small non-messy snack. Plane food is expensive and sometimes erm.... not good.
