I want to research my ancestry. I have little information. I know the state where they lived when they had their first child. I know his full name, my grandmother's last name is questionable. Grandmother is african-american and grandfather was caucasian. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to begin? I appreciate any help. Thanks.

The Mormon Church has an extensive genealogy database which they allow free access.
Web site is below. Good luck :)

Your family. And, the older - the better. When I started tracing my own family tree, I first went to my grandma's and granddad's to hear what they had to say. Of course, this wasn't easy, since their memory isn't the most precise anymore, but I found out a lot of stuff.

After this, you can search the net. And you can, perhaps, search the online telephone books if you have an ancestor with a strange surname.

Anyway, good luck :)

I agree with Blur to start your search at: (free site)
http://www.familysearch.org/

A great website that has a huge list of other genealogical websites is: (free site)
http://www.cyndislist.com/

If you find yourself really interested in finding more on your family I would highly suggest: (paid subscription site)
http://www.ancestry.com/

Ancestry is a paid website but the information that you can obtain from there is incredible! You can always try the two week free trial to see what you find. I truly do not work for Ancestry.com, I have just been very successful at finding information on their site.

Good luck!

The first and most important thing is that you start with your immediate family.Start with your own details and any brothers and sisters then your parents uncles and aunts then grand parents.
You work backwards and you keep notes.Don't start by looking along way back and then coming up to today work forward from today.Family research is very expensive only go to them when you can go no further yourself.Good LUCK.

i used to work at a historical society house and i would look at old obituaries and find out names and search old papers for births and things like that.
