Really it could be very bad and haunting ... You ought to have ignored initial problems in timely and smoother evacuation... You should also be having improper diet regime that needs to be changed with more fibre (greens), salads (sprouts, fruits) and avoiding food items that are likely to dry up the bowels like hot, spicy, tinned stuff, etc...

For acute constipation, you could insert suppositories (adult) which are waxy sticks that would melt in the rectum and push the wastes smoothly.. or take enema ... or keep fibre capsules given to heart patients for smooth evacuation without strain that is not good particularly if one has problems in heart or hernia etc...

But the above are only for emergency and you should not allow habitual constipation to develop which may end up with bleeding piles, fissures etc... The proper food regime, exercise etc would help a lot...

Water therapy (involving taking of abundant water - 2 to 3 litres per day especially 1.2 litre first thing in the morning to start with) would completely eradicate the problems of constipation and piles, besides other ailments like hyperacidity, gastric ulcer etc... I had benefitted by this among several of my friends (in fact a friend gave me this idea and I took it up half heartedly but got so much relief from several complaints)... Even joint pains (said to be caused by ineffective elimination of uric acid and other toxins that get deposited in the joint ligaments) are relieved, claim the protagonists of the therapy...

Besides there are yoga exercises that would improve the muscle power of bowels to move as soon as wastes build up in the colon... A clean bowel would make you fresh for the day's work and improve the appetite and general stamina.. Good luck.
