No, it isn't. It is how Limewire users use the software that can make "it" llegal. Limewire warns you if something you want downloaded doesn't come with any copyright notice. Limewire also removes, censors or bans any file/software when the respective owners ask for their files to be "removed from the network".

Moreover, Limewire does not host any of the stuff that you download. Limewire is a peer file-sharing software and is totally legitamate, except for the few screensaver software that appears in its search results page everytime you do a search! (I believes those few screensavers are from their sponsors/advertisers). I've been a Limewire Pro user for 2 years and the only difference is its downloading speed - much faster.

Ok, Limewire - YOU OWE ME FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! lol :)

In 2005, it was ruled that sites like Limewire are legal. You can use the service without fear of prosecution. In the ruling, it was stated the the creators/owners/managers of such sites are responsible for ensuring that the activities on the service remain legal. So, basically, unlike the entire Napster scandal where consumers were sued, if there is a problem with the service, the organization, itself, will be held responsible. When you pay for the service, you are legally obtaining material. You cannot allow other people to use your service, though.

LimeWire itself is not illegal, no.

But the things you download off of it can be. In fact, it is very likely that everything you download off limewire will turn out to be illegal, so I would recomend not using it.

No, the software itself is not illegal.

Sharing, or downloading copywritten material that you do not have a license to own, is illegal.
