Look for more natural foods. I've heard of Innova, Bill Jac, Natural Balance, Nutro. Try to stay away from stuff that lists corn as it's first product (usually corn meal).
My dog eats Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy (she's a boxer shepherd mix), and it's the first food she's loved.

What a question! I'm thinking you'll get alot of replies and links on this one! I feed mine Blue Buffalo. 3 pit bulls. 2 are 6 and 1 is 10 months. The 6 yr old female started limping about 2 years ago after walks and exercise. I took her to the vet and the x-ray showed she alredy had arthritis in both knees. I was feeding them Beniful at the time. The vet recommended thier presciption food for joint repair and maintenance. I bought it and fed it to her for probably a year. At $70 for a 35 lb bag of dry, I started looking on the web and found the Blue, sold at Petsmart for a little over $40 for 35 lbs. Also feeding 3 different types of food,( puppy, prescription and adult for the 6 yr male was a bit of a pain mainly because they would all think what the other dog had was better and want to get into each others bowls. Anyways, I feed them the Blue, from Petsmart. Now all 3 are on the same food and the pup will be on the adult soon too. My arthritic female is doing great on the Blue. I used to give her supplements for the arthritis before, but with Blue, it's just dry food, no supplements, she is doing great and they love it! They are more active and look healthier than ever! I'm sure ther are ones just as good and better! But, driving a few miles down the road to my local Petsmart is alot easier then a special, expensive, order only or all natural raw diet for me! They digest it good with easy to scoop up piles of poop and look great!! Till this day I truly regret giving them the Beniful! There are many foods out there that are much better if you just look around. My dogs do get some people food too, but mainly lean meat like leftover chicken, turkey. Also they absolutely love cantalope and watermelon!

Read the ingredients list on the dogfood bags at the store. Don't buy anything that lists byproducts or byproduct meals as its protein source. Beaks and feathers are poultry byproducts. Old boot leather is a beef byproduct. The bags should read chicken/beef/whatever, or even chicken meal is okay (that just means it includes bones as well as meat.)
I personally like Natural Balance, and Bil-Jac. When the budget is tight, I'm okay with Iams or Nutro.
I wouldn't recommend feeding canned food as your dog's primary nutrition unless your vet recommends it. Kibble helps keep your dog's teeth cleaner.

Here are two sites that have rated dog foods
http://www.dogfoodanaylsis.com
http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=main
I feed Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul
Stay away from foods with corn, by-products, and food dye. Get a food that starts with an actual meat procuct.
If you are looking for a cheap yet good food, Costco's food is a good choice.
Good luck

Hi,
I have a 9 month old Pug Puppy and I feed him Solid Gold Puppy Food. His Vet told me I couldn't feed him anything better then that. He is full of himself and very, very healthy. But it is expensive, if it is too expensive for you then try Pedigree Puppy Food, it is all small kibble. Both have everything a puppy needs.

feed them what your vet recommends if you like or you decide what you think is best. what was they eating before? why not keep it on the food it has been eating? changing the food can cause stomach upset and diarrhea!
