I chose french in school, italian and then japanese.. just because i'm interested in cultures and languages. nobody forced me to choose those, but in China or Japan most school people know English cause it is required in their country.

The question is why? Why can't they just study other languages? sure i know some do.. but i think more people study english.

English is the most widely-spoken language in the world. Other countries who don't have it as an official language should learn it if they should go out of the country at any time. Also, there are a lot of foreign travelers that go to asian countries and speak English. It'd be good for you to help them or if you need a job and need to serve one of these costumers. Also, HK once was ruled under the United Kingdom and their main language is English so that might also be an influence. It's also pretty easy to learn and to get the hang of. Some asian countries also allow you to learn other languages besides English if you've already done it.

English is a world language by which you can communicate with most nationalities. Not so many people know Italian or Japanese. Even Japanese and Chinese people communicate with each other using English.

English native speakers are just lucky being able to use their language almost anywhere in the world. You don't know how lucky - I've seen little Chinese children going to English classes for 8 hours a week and doing loads of English homework, forced by their mothers who know it's best for their future.
