Go to start, then set program access and defaults, click on custom, then click on Windows Media Player as your default media player. No need to unistall the Real Player. You can still use it if you want.

You can open media player and go to the settings and make it default player. Another way is to reinstall Media Player and just apply it as default player.

The complete answer:

On the Start Menu, there's an option called "Set Program Access and Defaults".

This option allows you to set your preferred internet browser, e-mail program, media player, instant messenger, and Java virtual machine. You could either select "Microsoft" to set all your defaults back to Microsoft programs, or you could select "Custom", drill down, and select "Windows Media Player".

File/Options
Click the "File types" tab.
Check each file type you want WMP to be the default player for.

Control Panel>
Add/Remove Programs>
