There are too many to list or be certain to have an accurate count without leaving any one particular discipline out and being fair to each discipline.

There're also many variations as to the way the discipline's are taught or organized. mostly due to the disagreements or cooperations of people throughout the world.

So to be fair and honest about my answer to your question, I don't think that there's ever been an exact compilation of EVERY discipline of Martial Art or fighting art in the world that can be found.

there're disciplines that I've never heard of, and I've read about many through the years.

About 250 or so

Theres even a list of fictional arts used in books and movies. I was surprised when I saw some of them as I have read and heard people talking about them as if they train in them which is funny concidering they never exhisted as arts.

However there are probably many others that are not recognized as real styles. For instance some of the MMA schools. Look at it this way ninedemond and I could open a dojo I teach Judo he teaches Muay Thai we add them together and we call it Ju Muay Do... We just supposedl invented an art.

There are as many styles as there different types of people. The arts were mans first sciences for defending themselves. They were developed and passed down to generations after. Changes occurred all along the way.
There are many styles that died out with the people who practiced them.

It is mind boggling to think about really......

It's impossible to count. How would we know which styles has died off? Hidden group that teach only to other? Fake style that no longer exist? Mcdojo? You'll never have the answer no matter how hard you try to do your research.

More than anyone can count & there are more being add all the time. I'm sure it is in the thousands. I wouldn't be surprised if it's 100,000 if you count all the varieties.
