My oldest son (he's 4) was sick for 3 days with a stomach bug. I had to take him to the hospital because he was becoming dehydrated. My biggest fear is "catching" that.. I have been frequently washing my hands, and keeping everything clean.. I have a younger son and I need to be able to take care of both of my boys. I am just really affraid of getting anything like that. I mean he was really sick. So how contagious is it, and is there anything else I can do to prevent myself and anyone else from geting that?

The "Roto" virus is a contact virus, and as long as you have washed your hands, there is little chance that you will catch it. It is possible that he ingested an enteric pathogen that made him sick that was bacteriological in nature, not viral. Again, hard to catch, but can lead to serious flu like symptoms. I hope that you and your boys will be OK!!!!

Some of the symptoms people think of as stomach flu is actually food poisoning, and the treatment is mostly the same. Healthy adults usually don't get as sick as a child. The one to watch is your younger son who might get dehydrated faster. I think it's too late to prevent, but you probably shouldn't let your younger son eat or drink after your 4 year old. And wash your hands frequently. Hope your older son is feeling better now.

Hi there,

You should continue to wash your hands. Washing hands is the best method to prevent from getting germs. Sanitize anything you or your kids touched (clorox wipes or lysol disinfect are good). Eat your vitamins. If you do catch it, drink cranberry juice to help stop it, and also to prevent dehydration.

Info on cranberry juice below.

Hope this helps! I hope your kid feels better!

If it's a VIRUS...it's very contagious.

He may have had a bacterial infection. If that is the case, it may just be limited to just him....

You're doing the right thing...handwashing and keeping things clean.
