why do people have to have arms?

You could carry nothing, pick up nothing and never hug your loved ones. Try strappping your arms to your sides inside your shirt and see how it would be.

If we'd never had arms, our balance would be completely off. Each part of your body serves to balance another part. Without the arms, survival wouldn't be as easy. But then again, those who are more adaptable can deal with not having them and substitute other parts of the body for the arms.

Chances are we'd still be living in caves without them. Much of human tool use (and hence technology) is dependent on the manual dexterity provided by the arms, hands and fingers.

I would venture to guess you can adapt however things are devised for the majority of humanity and if that majority had no arms then things would be made for humans without arms as they would be the majority.

It would sure be difficult not to have arms. I know that some people who have no arms learn to feed themselves with their feet.
