Catnip is to cats like hmmm... (do not know your age so) .... a very "YEAH YEAH YEAH" to a cat! They love the smell and it excites them but no way addictive! It is naturally grown and safe for all animals and humans, only cats are hyper to it and do have a big crash after playing! But will be up to play again!

yes, it is like marijuana for cats.
The active ingredient in catnip is called Nepetalactone. The response to this chemical is mediated through the olfactory system (vomeronasal organ) that cats have a special receptor for. From the About.com Chemistry site:

When cats smell catnip they exhibit a range of behaviors that may include sniffing, licking and chewing the plant, head shaking, chin and cheek rubbing, head rolling, and body rubbing.

Not that I know of, one of my cats would get weird around the catnip. We put it on a scratch poll and he would just play and scratch away. My other didn't really care about it. I don't know what it does to the cats, but It's obviously not strong enough to attract all cats.

Is it a "cat drug"? I don't know, but most cats act as you described and can't seem to leave it alone. Others, like some humans, use it once and walk away from it after that.

It's a herb. I guess you could call it a drug, depending on how you define a drug.

It's not addictive and it has no known adverse effects.

Some cats don't go for nip, but those that do can indulge to their hearts' content in complete safety.
