because right now we have some tv's that can output up to 1080HD and the most we can get right now even with channels that are HD is 720 HD.

The reason they don't broadcast in 1080p is because we currently don't have a way of carrying it. The higher the resolution, the more amount of data that has to be sent, and cable and satellite are currently unable to send that much data.

The HD requirement for television does not mandate a 1080 signal. 480p is the minimum allowed to be transmitted but many stations have chosen to wait until late 2008 to make the final move. That way they will get the most technology for the expenditure of funds.

No networks broadcast in 1080p. Some broadcast in 1080i, and some broadcast in 720p. In order to get 1080p content, you'll have to either buy HD-DVD movies and a player or buy Blu Ray movies and a player.
