I wanna get a dog (small breed) but I don't know which is right for me. I want one that's not too active (maybe a lap dog).

The best answer to this question is to visit your local animal shelter several time and try a new one each time. After a few visits you will know.

I hated small yappy dogs until I got my large breed Chihuahua. (20 lbs) He's by far the smartest dog I've ever owned and he's big enough to play a little rough with without being afraid of hurting him. I've owned Siberian Huskies, Dachshunds, Beagles, Boxers, Wire Haired Terriers and Cockers. Don't get a Cocker if you want a peaceful pet... they have a tendency to bounce off walls. Stay with a Toy breed and keep away from Working and Sporting breeds. If you're a 1st time dog owner you may want to consider adopting an adult dog that's already housebroken and out of the hyper puppy stage, although there is something to watching your best friend grow up.

Toy breeds are nervous and not suited for first time pet owners... a lazier breed would be a Shih Tzu.. these dogs are non-shedding which means they must visit a groomer regularly and be brushed daily...(you brush your hair daily I assume)

NEVER NEVER buy a dog from a pet store - you will pay too much for a low quality pet - plus they will lie to get a sale

for good price and HONEST info go to your local SPCA or rescue..

you should get an adult as puppies are crazy active and chewers...
do NOT get a Terrier - they are hyper (bred to hunt rodents)

make a list so qualities you want in your dog. Do some research on different breeds. Find out whats out there in your area.
I would deffinetly suggest a dog book with all the breeds and also try purina's dog finder purina.com.
if you can't bother doing all the research then don't bother getting a dog.

there are books you can read that ask you questions about your lifestyle and preferences, after taking the questionnaire, it will suggest breeds that suit your lifestyle. I think one is called the Right Dog for You. In any case, smaller dogs usally can be pretty hyper, so do your research first.

Go to the following website and fill out the questionnaire. It should help you: http://www.petnet.com.au/selectadog.html
Also - consult your vetrinarian. The doc can help answer your questions about some of the different breeds, especially after you have narrowed it down with a search like the one I just recommended.

A Pug requires very little exercise and love to sit in your lap, but..... They do require a lot of love. Any of your small dogs will require someone to be home with them, if you work, I strongly suggest you do not get a dog of any kind until you can be home with them.

Chihuahua's are easy to take care of and shed very little. They are very sweet and loyal, and little of course. We have one...he is such a little clown, and very smart. We love our chihuahua. Before I had one, I would look at them and think they were just yappy, nervous, little dogs. But our chihuahua is smarter than any dog I've owned. I've owned two pom's...they are a lot of work. They are yappy, their coat needs a lot of attention. You have to keep their butt clipped so they don't get feces stuck in them. They require a lot of exercise...and they would not let me out of the house without throwing a fit. They are gorgeous but I would never let one own me again.
