Are those my only two choices? Because I'm not sure either one is completely satisfactory to me. One should not follow a religion with blind obedience, inasmuch as a religion is man's effort to do God's will. I need to find out first of all what God wants, not what my "religion" wants me to do. And I know God wants me to "love God and love my neighbour". And I think that answers your question - it does mean doing what is right for all. But it does not necessarily mean doing what everybody wants us to do.
The Samaritan in Jesus' parable (or was it the story of something Jesus knew had actually happened? Who knows!?) rescued, at great cost, a man of another religion and of another race. That was "loving your neighbour" according to Jesus.
EDIT:
Fish says "What I follow is right" - I hope he doesn't mean he can never be wrong, but that he is trying to follow what is right.

Depends on the situation I guess.
I have a lot of faith in my religion (I'm a Catholic) but I also have my own reservations. Some of my beliefs kinda clash w/ some Catholic beliefs. But I don't go around shouting about it. I just keep it to myself and gently (okay, heatedly sometimes) point out my points when someone goes overboard.
At the end of it all, I still belief in God, etc. But I'm against some so-called 'taboos'.
I don't think anyone has the right to tell you off about it. It's your mind. Nobody has the right to control how you think. So if you think what you're doing is right, go for it.

Well that depends on your religion. But no one should follow any religion blindly. And I don't believe that anyone knows their religion in full. No matter how long you live there is always something new to learn... You do what you know if right. No religion should ever stop you from doing a good deed for another person.

Right is a universal value, of course. Preference should not be given to one's tribes in applying justice. As for blind obedience, no true religion requires that. Blind obedience is not what is required of spiritual growth; it's what sect leaders require of their followers.

I'm of the opinion that blind obedience is never good. Always assess the situation and decide in a realistic manner. Do what's right for you, and right for the community.

Religion isn't a tribal thing. James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

no i don't follow my religion blindly, I'm Catholic and they believe that being gay is a sin, but yet my dad is gay and he's no different then before he "came out", so I can't believe that, and I also don't believe in banning abortion, because, just because I don't believe in it doesn't mean that other people don't have a right to believe in it....I agree with what's right for all, although I still follow the faith of Catholicism, there are things that I cannot totally agree with

What I follow is right. I don't have a tribe. My ancestors gave up tribal practices many years ago.

why follow with blind obedience? God gave you the capacity to reason, why not use it?
