My husband and I just got a pit bull. (he has had them before. my first.) We are under the assomption that they are illegal in side of city limits (Tahlequah, Oklahoma) but you can buy a yearly licence to have them. I really like my dog and I dont want any one to take him. So could someone please tell me what is legal and what is not.

I do not know the law there but I would like to comment if I may...Pits have a really bad rep....and it is soooo wrong..I have one and like any dog its all in the training and love you give them...Mine is sweet and nice and gets along with kids and other pets..Any dog will get defensive if they are threatened and the meanest dog I know of is a Chihuahua the mean things hate others and have very sharp teeth and claws....treat your pit with lots of love!!!and don't make it mean!!!

okay I know that pits are banned in colorado and miami fla . and tulse ok i think too . canada also banned them. Miamis mayor and city council banned them last year because too many ppl were showing up in emergency rooms with dog attack bites from pits running up their health care for the indigent program. In other words costing the county money . I dont know the story in colorado though i think it was the same thing . good luck and god bless . if you really want to keep this dog get the license but also muzzle it so that it does not cost you money in the long run such as with a lawsuit from it attacking or biting someone and costing you a great deal of money. good luck and god bless.

you answered your own question... you said they are legal if you buy a yearly license. Get the license.. to avoid any legal trouble, and get your dog microchiped as well. That will help in case your dog was ever confiscated, because you can identify that it is your dog if need be.
You can always call city hall, and ask them about dog laws in your city.. they will give you the 100% correct answer, and your animals life is not something you want to be unsure about!

you all are delusional. They are dangerous. It is in their genetic makeup. If my step daughter doesn't value her baby enough to get rid of her dog before it is old enough to harm him, she will be losing custody.Period. She is not playing Russian roulette with his safety . My family had one, loved and raised it from a pup. Sudden move by my young nephew and he almost lost his life.(of course, I am sure there will be more blame the victim...he must have MOVED suddenly, or done SOMETHING to make the dog aggressive. Put yourself at risk if you chose. Not your kids or others.

Contact a local shelter or humane society and ask for their advice. They will certainly be able to tell you the rules for your area. Good luck.
