Idiot lights are generally referred to on all cars that have indicator lights instead of actual gauges, such oil temp, water temp, low oil or other such nonsense. More often then not, when the light comes on to tell it's a problem, it's already to late or you are already aware of the problem (eg. steam coming out from under the hood), where as a guage can be watched and something can be done about. You will know you are overheating just by watching the temp on the guage rise to abnormal levels. It is presumed most people can read a gauge and interept the data. Also car makers tend to like to use the idiot lite system because it is cheaper than installing all the guages. Gauges cost more money, and for just general driving they are adequate, but not if you are in a sports car on a track.
