Before you suggest Head and Shoulders, Selsun Blue or Neutrogena, read me:.. I DID. So DONT suggest that. Its really annoying to see people post suggestions or answers when they dont read the entire question, in an effort to get points.

Its not that I have dandruff, or a serious issue of flakes. Its the ITCHING that drives me up a wall. I scratch my head for a minor itch and it becomes a major desire to scratch my ENTIRE head and mess up my hair. Its like i have dry skin or something, but it rarely is flakey or dusty. If it IS dusty, its because of the gel in my hair. I dont think my scalp is reacting to the gel either, because ive used it for a while with no issues. Ive also tried other gels, with similar results. Colder weather, and shorter hair (like a buzz cut) seem to make my head itch more and more. Also, when I wear a hat, it gets worse.
Is my scalp dry? Will conditioner help? A different shampoo? Hot water? Im at my wits end.... But my head itches so bad sometimes... Any idea

No Amy, I do not have head lice. I do not have living organisms roaming around on my head.

What a Stupid and retarded post. We are all dumber for having listened to that. I award you no points.

My mother has the same problem - you are not alone. Sometimes I have it too.

First, make sure that you have really rinsed your hair after you have washed it. After you have done that, rinse it again. And then again. I sometimes run spout to the tub and rinse my hair under there (not a comfortable way to do this), and I am amazed that I still get a bit more soap out.

Second, find a high, high quality shampoo that does not contain any petroleum products. Look for all natural products. You can easily spend $15 to $20 a bottle for a shampoo. This is so important. On a molecular level, petroleum, which is in nearly every soap and moisturizer, is larger than our skin cells. It rests on the skin cells, essentially suffocating them. Your skin dies off, becomes dry and itchy.

I could list a bunch of brands that don't carry petroleum, but I will tell you the brand I am using now is JBeverlyHills. (website is jbeverlyhills.com) One bottle of shampoo is $19. It isn't cheap, but my head doesn't itch anymore either.

A yahoo or google search for petroleum free shampoo will give you a large selection. Try it. You don't have much to lose.

First, try to not wash your hair as much, that might help a little. Than I'm sure conditioner would work quite well too. It is probably just dry scalp but you might wanna see a doctor/dermatologist. Good luck!!

Sounds like head lice better get checked. If you're afro-american then it could be from simple lack of stimulation due to braiding or other hairstyles that dont allow you to get a good scalp brushing often enough. There are spray on products and oils that will help. See your stylist.

You need to see a dermatologist. It sounds like you have a rash on your scalp. A doctor will be able to prescribe something to use on your head that will stop the itching.

If it isn't head lice, try using Seabreeze. Just massage into your hair about twice a week. That is the liquid astringent not the pads. Good luck.

It could be psoriasis. I'd check with a dermatologist. Some cases of psoriasis are very flaky while others are not flaky at all, but they all itch.
