So basically the poor and needy look at the religion with bright eyes? Hmm.

Against all odds Original Muslims never planned to spread it is fate, how: let understand few things first: Arabian Penesuela and the fertile Cresecent (that is Iraq and Syria - there were no Jordan, Lebanon, Palestian at the time) were united in many ways and people felt related. When Islam first mission was to unite the peoples of Arabia it became apparent that freeing the north from the Romans inthe north east and persian in the north west was important to complete the the unification of the northern tribes and secure the North. Omar the 1st prayed that the mountains in Iraq would form a natural borders with Persia and he made it clear and send a letter ot his commander not to enter egypt; but in a very famous story the commander delayed recieving the letter until he had already entered egypt. the defeat of Rome and Persia under the young Islamic Armies and the pure peaceful message they carried across made people welcome them and as matter of fact invite them to ridd them of the tyrants that were ruling them. This is how it started but then conquest became a mission of the "Islamic Empire" to free people and let them know the truth about Islam. Hence after Islam spread by word like in east asia and central africa and now the west.

no offence but your statement is very silly - Islam spread in Arabia after people HEARD the Quran recited in Arabic (recall that all pre-modern civilizations were oral rather than written - Jesus (pbuh) spread his message through speaking not writing) - in that time though the Arabs weren't a literate people generally they had highly developed poetry and language - when this new extraordinary beautiful language came they knew it was from God
Just as God convinced Pharaoh's people who were great magicians with the greater 'magic' of Moses he convinced the poetic eloquent Arabs with the greater eloquence of the Quran
" The specific condition of the Arabian Peninsula was that the art of poetry was the heart and soul of the Arabian society. Poetry had become their second nature. The natural liking and literary taste for Arabic prose and poetry had become a part and parcel of their daily lives. Eloquence and rhetoric ran in their veins like blood. The pomp and splendor of their parties and meetings, the beautification and colorfulness of their fairs, the means for their pride and conceit, the medium for broadcasting and publications was entwined with Arabic poetry and prose. Their smallest children would articulate such eloquent poetry that the litterateurs and poets would be left dumbfounded. Some of the most blazing poetry ever scribed on paper was written and uttered in this era. In short, Allah had favored the dwellers of this blessed land with the inherent mastery over eloquence and rhetoric in which they had surpassed the rest of the world. They had so much pride over it that to them, the rest of the non-Arabic speaking world was known as ‘Ajami’: mute and unable to speak."
- and btw all the most literate people like Umar became Muslims because they were amazed by it!! and from 700-1500 Islam was the most scientifically advanced civilization on the planet
You say that "more than 50% of all muslims can't read or write even today" - but in the past literacy was much higher in Muslim countries - and be literate isn't synonymous with being intelligent nearly all Americans are literate but a large percentage of them are incredibly dim as these pages demonstrate- and how many American Christians have met an non-Christians
You say that 75 % of Muslims have never met a person from another religion but this is ridiculous - how do you know? the countries with the largest population are Indonesia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh - between them they have about 60% of the worlds Muslims and all of them have large non-Muslim minorities (in fact India is 88% non-Muslim)

When Christianity spread, it was during a time in history when learning and education was at a low point. So one could say that Christianity took as much advantage of poor, uneducated people as Islam did if that was the case.

scary if those numbers are true, sadly most previous cultures in the mid-east were known for advanced thought, in mathmatics and astronomy etc. to think that such a rich culture could be in such decline is frightening. but as far as your questions, those numbers would suggest a very narrow view of the world in general, if what you say is true, it could create a massive flock of sheep.

I do hope that when you say illiterate, you mean in English or some other civilized language.
Because, isn't it a fact that all Moslems have to read the Koran?
How could they do that if they were illiterate?
Cheers!!!!
