My vote is pit bull. German Sheperds seem scary to me. The one I had was awesome. I had to give her away because I had to move. Just make sure your area allows pit bulls and the laws that go with. Happy choosing.

This may come as a surprise to you, but I've learned from experience and from reports from owners that Cocker Spaniels are VERY protective of their houselhold, meaning the humans where they live, and they're also "cute and cuddly", so you may want to add this possibility to your list. Now, choosing strictly from your list, I've had all three or have close family who have them, and I can't say one's better than the other. My step son and his wife have two HUGE Rottweillers, a father and son, and they are so very friendly it's unbelievable. I have a WONDERFUL German Shepherd that I've had for 12 years, and he's been the most obedient, loyal, friendly, cuddly thing you'd ever see, and he'll let strangers know VERY QUICK, that HE'S the boss around here on our country land, and the strangers won't forget. And about 20 years ago I came upon a 6 month old stray full-blood Pit Bull, and she was the most friendly thing I'd ever seen. Later, I gave her to a family with two young children because they wanted a "guard dog" of sorts, and the man was very experienced with dogs and I knew he'd train my Pitt Bull well and not abuse her, so, considering all on your list, I'd have to hope you keep them outside, and I'd figure on what your dog food bill's gonna be and whether you can afford it, lol. But do think about a Cocker Spaniel if you haven't before, and check with vets and pet store owners and look up about them. I can tell you from first hand experience and from several owners, those dogs are very protective of those they live with, they don't eat as much as the one's on your list, and they're very cute and cuddly. God Bless you.

We had a rotty when I was growing up, who was my angel.. he was sweet, gentle, and acted like a nanny to all us kids. He was protective.. but not mean. Now, my pitbull is the most loving caring dog I have ever owned.. (we had to put down our adopted purebread lab because he bit our son, so people should not judge the dog by the breed).. our pitbull lets our son poke her in the eye.. pull her ears.. ride on her back.. step on her... and she doesnt make a peep. However, she is NOT a good gaurd dog.. because thats not how we raised her. We taught her NOT to bark at strangers.. It has alot to do with who you get the dog from, and the parents of the dog. Whatever breed you get.... ask to meet the parents of the dog. Make sure they are not raising the dogs in a mean way, or training them to be viscious... and pay very close attention to the way the puppies are behaving. You can tell alot about a dog from the way they act as a puppy. scared timid puppies are sometimes not a good choice, because they can become defensive... and sometimes agression shows itself at a young age, so look for that too.
Also.. check your city for laws agains certain breeds, as well as your homeowners policy or renters insurance. Some breeds are outlawed in specific areas, and your renters/homeowners insurance CAN be canceled if you own certain breeds.. so look into that first.
I have owned all three breeds.. and all three have been great dogs, but we raised them to be kind to all humans.. and took lots of time to socialize them to other people and other dogs.

German Shephard, but as with all large guard type dogs be sure he has been bred with a sweet temperament in mind. We had GS's when I was a kid and they were sweet and smart and very, very protective. One we had would let anyone into the house, even a stranger. But if my dad wasn't home - ha ha!! - he wouldn't let them leave! We once had an insurance salesman stuck in our living room for over an hour. Caveat: any one of the breeds you have listed can give you what you are looking for, but obediance training is a MUST. If you can't handle the dog, he WILL handle you and then you are asking for trouble.

if i had to choose i would choose a German Sheppard. make sure no matter what you get you get it as a puppy so you can raise it the right way. also see if you can spend time around the parents and other siblings of the dog to see how the blood line is. i have known many GOOD pits and rots. ya know golden retrievers are wonderful protectors as well as awesome lovable family dogs. they have a HUGE bark as well so just hearing them is a good deterrent. good luck.

I have owned a rottie and fostered a couple. I love them. Used to be afraid of them until the first one showed up here when someone dumped him on our road. It was a week before I would even do more than open the door just wide enought to fill his water and food bowls. Turned out he was very nice. He couldn't have hurt me if he wanted since he was practically toothless. We fostered him for awhile and found him a home. Then we bought Roxy. What a wonderful dog she was. Smart, loving, loyal, but yes, protective. Our second foster found us the same way the first one did, just showed up here one day. I know that dog would have killed for me. He bonded to me instantly, but we knew we couldn't keep him. We had an ad for him in the paper and one day these 2 large muscular guys came to look at him. They really wanted him. He was a beautiful rottie. Thing is when they were here, he stood up with his front paws on my shoulder and would look at them, then look at me and growl at them. He was warning them to keep their distance. I wish we could have kept him but we had to find him another home.

German Shephard .... They are beautiful, very loyal and obedient. I love mine. His name is Max, 10 years old and has been raised with children. Best pet for a family....Nothing compares to the Shephard. They can be inside or outside dogs.
Good luck.....

Of those three, I'd say the German Shepherd.
Consider a Boxer. Adorably daft at times, but intelligent and loyal. Pretty easygoing, but can be defensive of their territory.
Whatever you get, make sure the dog knows YOU are in charge. They can get very alpha-male, especially if they're mostly around a woman on her own.
