We bought a breed that was a mix of a poodle (mother) and a havanease. Our dog is very mild manner and is now 15 pounds, and should stay that size. We went to a breeder and found if we were patient and didn't want a 6 to 8 week puppy, the price of the puppy went down. The breeder called us with an almost 3 month old dog, and it was half the price.

I've got a little mixed breed: Chihuahua, Maltese, Poodle and Rough Jack Russell Terrier.
She is perfect.
Her coat has Chihuahua blondish coloring, little bit of a rough and ready Jack Russell coat, with some Maltese length, and a little Poodle wave to it.
She is the smartest, funniest, most expressive dog I have ever owned....and she is full grown at 10 lbs.
She is loving like a Chihuahua, protective like a terrier, smart like a Poodle, and sweet like a Maltese.
People have yelled from moving SUV's that she is "so cute"! , and others stop to say hello to her........she is a real character. Good luck!

If you really want a fun yet small dog, consider a pug. They are small but not a foo foo dog like yorkies that can easily break a bone . Pugs will always make you laugh because they are so funny. And for their size they are tough little dogs.

When you narrow your decision down to a few breeds you should do some research, (especially if getting a purebread). Certain breeds are prone to tons of problems, whether its skin, respiratory, seizures etc Dachshunds can be great dogs but the risk of back injury is pretty high surgery can run $2,500-$5,000.

Maltese are loving and playful. They are about 5-6 pounds grown. I have 3 of them. I also have a Yorkie.

I am a fan of Pomeranians, which are small, cute, and so smart. They are not as small and fragile as Yorkies. Mini and standard dachshunds are great companions too. Beware the Bichon Frise - cute, fluffy, doll-faced, but likes to bite.

You should get a yorkie too! I have 5 cats and 3 baby kitties right now...(my cat just had kittens) and my yorkie just loves the cats! Yorkies get along wonderfully with cats!
