This is the 3rd time today that I have had a massive hiccup attack. There is usually a 5-10 second pause after every hiccup. I have not eaten anything for several hours. Each hiccup attack has lasted around an hour and a half. I have tried all the tricks but nothing is really working. Is something wrong?

I have had this same thing happen to me one thansgiving. First try holding your breath and swallowing, or drinking slow small sips of water. if that doesn't work take a tums and rub your stomach. Also try and eat something like crackers or a banana. Something plain that will not upset your stomach. Hope that helps.

HiccupCauses
Most people have short bouts of hiccups now and again. They are usually caused by things like:
Stretching of the stomach after rapid eating, drinking, or swallowing air or fizzy drinks; Sudden emotional excitement, upset or surprise, including laughing; Sudden change of air temperature, for example taking a cool shower; Very hot or cold food or drink; and Alcohol, or excess smoking. Long periods of hiccups (more than 48 hours) and frequently recurring hiccups sometimes happen. This may have no apparent cause at all, or may be caused by a common complaint such as heartburn or acid reflux. However, sometimes the underlying cause can be a serious condition, such as:
Irritation of the diaphragm by infection, by cancer spread from elsewhere, or by a hiatus hernia (when part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm); Irritation of the phrenic nerve (which controls the diaphragm) by cancer or chest surgery; Brain infection or tumour; Severe kidney failure; Severe general infections such as malaria; Central nervous system conditions such as multiple sclerosis; Anaesthesia-related, for example during abdominal surgery; Problems with body chemistry (metabolism) such as hyperglycaemia (too much sugar in the body); and Certain drugs such as benzodiazepines, which are tranquillisers and hypnotics.

This I do not know, sorry. But if you try swallowing 1 teaspoonful of sugar, you will stop hiccuping.

This is not just another trick, this is a doctor proven method in the book, The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies, and it works.

And I have heard people say, that is gross or will make them sick! How much sugar do they think they eat all the time without even realizing it in the foods they eat.

And what's gross about it? It comes right out of the cane fields where it is raised, used on cereal, in coffee, all kinds of stuff.

Also, may I suggest www.webmd.com They have very good advice.

Hiccups are spasms of a muscle called your diaphram that helps ho breathe. Hiccups are usualy nothing but can be caused by too much acid or grease in your stomach. That's why hiccups are associated with drinking because alchohol is so acidic. Maybe a change in diet is needed. In the mean time, drink lots of water and pop a few tums.

Much love,
Genevive

It could be worse....The world record for hiccups (according to Guinness) is held by a farmer from Iowa who apparently hiccupped for more than 60 years for no known reason

I think it is normal, just more severe than usual. What I have tried, and has helped me is taking a deep breath and holding it as long as I can. That puts pressure on your diaphragm which is in spasm.
