IT DOES NOT GIVE YOU ARTHRITIS - I asked my rheumatologist (no I don't go to him for arthritis) about cracking my knuckles and he said it was not harmful! In fact... cracking certain joints(the ones in your back) can release endorphins - IE make you a happier person

I've cracked my fingers and toes for years and years, and have had no problems. Then I read last year in Reader's Digest that cracking your knuckles won't cause arthritis like everyone used to say.

The idea that cracking your knuckles is bad for you is a MYTH. It really releaves the pressure that builds up in your joints. Just dont do it every second of the day because it becmoes a nervous habit.

That has to do with displacing joint fluid (the sound)
If it is non-voluntary it 1) sometimes just happens or 2) can be an indicator of joint wear.
When you do it as a habit on purpose, it may be annoying to some, but contrary to all the wives tales, it won't hurt you.

IT DOES NOT GIVE YOU ARTHRITIS!!!! I have been doing it for years(not the most attractive thing, I know) and was told by my parents when I was young that it would give me big knuckles and arthritis. I have asked several doctors and was told by every one of them that it is not true. Just a myth.

The sound is gas being released from within the joint capsule. Wait 30 minutes and you can 'crack' them again.
There is no evidence in support of the old wives tale of 'cracking your knuckles only makes them bigger'.

lol you do not get arthritus, the crackins is theorised to be caused by a change in pressure on the synovial fluid between joints, which causes them to bubble and 'crack' to the low pressure area.. this should stop cracking of said joint for around 10 minutes. cracking can also be caused by tendons wrapped around bones which 'crack' as they rub across the bone when it is being moved (generally shoulder rotations)

cracking your knuckles just pulls the joint apart a little creating a air gap that u hear pop, next time u pop your knuckles.

Medical science goes back and forth on this more than "are eggs good or bad for you?" I think the latest info is that it's bad and contributes to arthritis, but you never know. I still do it, I can't help it.

Firstly, I cringe. I just hate that sound. It releases some pressure form the joints but I heard that it is not harmful.
