Bones do change according to the forces they receive. There are basically two types of bone, cortical bone (the outer layer) and the trabecular bone (the meshwork inside the bone). Corticol bone increases with compressive forces while trabecular bone increases due to shear forces (lateral forces). Theoretically, those with increased body mass will develop more cortical bone in response to the increased amount of compressive forces...it might increase the volume of bone slightly, but does not necessarily change the "size" of the bone. Increased body mass in the serverly obese is also, unfortunately, associated with degeneration of the joint cartilage as it does not respond to stress as bone does. This usually leads to painful arthritis.

In working with those who are obese, the reliability of being able to feel the bones decreases...in other words, it is much more difficult to "feel" or palpate the bones and other bodily tissues in those who are obese.

when you are heavy it puts such stress on your bones that they just wear out. No, they dont grow bigger to accomodate the fat, and yes the fat does make it harder to feel the bones.

The bones stay the same size. That's why so many people who have put on a lot of weight begin to have joint problems. They are there, just more difficult to see because of added fat.

Your bones may get wider in response to the extra load they have to carry. They could get stronger. However though... the joints, junction between two bones, gets tooo much extra stress and tend to fail at a higher rate.

Being "fat" is not good on the body in any pysiological way.

i think they would have to grow a bit. Or, maybe the extra weight may compact the bone giving a false increase in diamater, while shortening the bone slightly?
