I posted a question yesterday about what to do about my 11 year old's skin, which was really dry on his whole body from the cold winter.

the answers I got here was to use lotion for dry skin, and I got him Olay Quench Body lotion which it says breaks the cycle of dry skin.

I told him to use it right after he has baths, I rub the lotion on the areas its hard for him to get to like his back, but I do not supervise
when he applies lotion.

His whole body is still dry besides his back where I do the lotioning and I do not even know if he is using the lotion, I checked the bottle and it is still full.

What am I to do about this?

And Yes I did lotion his body only once when I found out the bottle was still full, I thought once I did it for him once he would do it himself, but he still is not applying it him self,

Aveeno, drink lots of water. Supervise him putting the lotion on and reapply twice daily.

Use Cetaphil or Eucerin instead. They are better for young children. My nephew's pediatrician recommended Cetaphil for his dry skin.

I think you will have to apply the lotion yourself every day until you can figure out whether or not the lotion is actually working. If you don't even know if he is applying the lotion, then you don't know if it's working or not.

You are his mom and he is still a young boy, so just explain to him that you have to do this in order to cure his dry skin. If he fights you about it, just explain that he will not be able to go outside and play in the snow at all if his skin does not get better. If that doesn't work, tell him that there are some kids in America who have a horrible skin disease that makes them have to cover their entire bodies with thick lotion several times a day and then cover themselves up with bandages just to keep their skin from falling off. And this disease never goes away. He is lucky that a few weeks of lotion will cure his skin and he won't have to do it anymore.

If this is a real bad problem you probably should talk to your doctor on what might be a good product to use. I work in a plastics factory and if anyone knows a plastic factory-- it is very dry and my hands are sooo dry that they crack and bleed. I have tried using Lubriderm advanced therapy for extra dry skin and it works OK but you have to be ahead of this and be on a schedule. Dry skin is very hard to control in the winter. So I went and bought Gold Bond medicated for dry & itchy skin and it is a little better but like I said --- you need to apply the lotion on a regular basis. I think you should make sure that your son is applying the lotion on a regular basis or it is not going to help. Maybe a doctor can give you something that might help the dry skin.

Origins Incredible Spreadible Scrub... Try www.gloss.com or at Dillards or on the Origins website. It doesn't smell girly and really exfoliates the body which helps moisture seep in. It leaves the skin a bit oily, like with baby oil and will stay on even after he gets out of the shower or bath. He can rub it on himself in either and that way even if he doesn't put lotion on he is getting something. I used this on both my boys who have the worst dry skin and it was amazing for them. I also tried Mary Kay's sugar scrub, but decided it was a bit too girly smelling:)

Also, Eucerin Lotion is my all time favorite! The original formula in the jar or the pump bottle.

PUT A HUMIDIFIER in his room and run it all night, every night. It will put moisture in the air that will help his skin.

My skin gets very dry too. I have used every lotion on the market. I would recommend Jergens Original Lotion. Also, lather the Vasoline like someone else said. Lay off the hot showers, that tends to dry skin a lot. Plus, make sure he gets an adequate amount of H20. A dehydrated person = dehydrated skin.

I suggest you have a nutritionist examine him. He could be lacking some vitamins causing his skin to be dry. Other suggestion, put some baby oil in the bath water and let him soak awhile. Make sure he gets his body in the water, so it moisturizes all over. Than get " Corn Husker's" lotion. It's been out a long time. You can find it at Wal Mart. Good Luck, the baby oil even works in the shower. Right before you get out of the showers, pour some baby oil in your hand or his and rub it all over. Warm water helps it cover the body. Make sure to get the elbow's and knee areas good. I even do this to my skin. It works great.

i have the same problem and went to the dermatologist for it . the best thing for him to do is to shower less. maybe 3 times a week. wash hair and the stinky areas everyday though. change his soap because soap can dry him out (lotion doesn't solve this problem only helps). try getting him to take a bath in keri body oil. and use cetephil body cleanser instead of soap you can buy walmart brand its less expenisve and works just as well. MY doctor recommended eucrin body cream and it works great . its really thick. for when im in a hurry and dont have time to rub this stuff in i use eucrin calming creme for dry and itchy skin. also tell him to pat dry after showers never rub that makes you even more dry. good luck.

Aveeno makes great lotion. Actually, I was at the store a couple of days ago and I was looking for lotions. The woman working there said her 13 year old's doctor recommends Aveeno (especially for sensitive skin). I personally love Aveeno (Dermatologist Recommended!) Good luck!

Run a warm bath and add baby oil. Have him take a long soak...please keep an eye on him. My child has the same problem...I do this for her and then I lotion her myself. Kids are never too old for a loving touch from mom. He will sleep better too! his skin should feel better by morning. Also you could put vaseline on his hands and feet and have him wear soaks on his hands and feet to bed.

If it is not bothering your son I would not worry about it. Boys at 11 are as I bet you found out, our real strange about mother and bathrooms.
Girly things like lotion do not go over to well, at least with two of our three boys. Two of them I would have to hog tie to put lotion on them, oldest boy knows how important things like this are and has no phobias about girly things.
Can your husband help out? Tell this boy it will help and maybe help him? My Mr. has to use lotion this time of the year. He puts on the lotion with baby powder on top of that, it really helps him from not itching so much.
Good luck!
