IST - Indian Standard Time.
It is 5.5 hrs ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).

As an example, India is 1.5 hrs behind Newyork. Just change night to day or viceversa. To know what is the best time to call your friend, say it is 8 a.m. in New York. It is 6:30 PM in India.

I completely disagree with Stareeys above. It is not nice to generalize any one. Indians do not come late to parties as he/she has suggested.
