I'm a painter and would like to begin selling my art to the public, but I need a lead to a reputable company. Any suggestions?

Before you can get an art dealer or agent, you have to build up your CV and have shows in Artist Run centres and try to get into some group shows, I don't know a dealer that would take someone on who hasn't shown before. (But the work should really speak for itself, some dealers are willing to take a chance on someone new.) If you have shown your work in your city, then research commercial galleries in your city that show work that you respect, and approach them by making appointments. The art game is tricky, follow your gut and ask around your art community. Most artists have stories about being burned by a dealer, or know someone who has, ask around. Good luck!

You need to get your work out there, talk to restaurant owners ask them to hang a few of your pieces, go to the smaller galleries and see what is selling; show your work.

Unless you are another (insert famous artist of your choice here) an agent just doesn't land in your lap.

It's called taking initiative and being a good salesman. Only you aren't selling a product really, you are selling yourself.

Its better so sell your own things. Many artists don't have an agent, when they get well-known many of their clients keep their name on a roster and call them back for more. Go to a gallery and see if they will represent you. It's better to have a lawyer to represent you when you need to fill out contracts so that no one will steal your work or steal copyright

You should make a "book" (yes, like a model but just with photographs of your best paintings) and talk with gallery owners.
An agent would not help.
